Student/Volunteer Concerns

  1. May I call your office for legal advice?
  2. Residency - For Tuition Purposes
  3. The Student Conduct Code
  4. Veteran Tuition Waiver Benefits

Q.  May I call your office for legal advice?

A.  While the Office of the Attorney General may advise and/or represent the University administration and staff, it is not authorized to give legal advice to its student community. There is an organization located in the Student Union that can help students with some of their legal problems - UConnPIRG (Connecticut Public Interest Research Group) is a statewide, student-directed environmental and consumer watchdog group whose UCONN chapter was founded by students 25 years ago. They also provide a Consumer Center, which helps students make informed decisions concerning credit cards, tenants rights, bank ATM fees, and other life issues. They may be phoned at 6-5002 or e-mailed at ucpirg@uconnvm.uconn.edu. For more information, please see the web pages for ConnPIRG at http://www.connpirg.org

Q.  What if my legal concerns involve my dual role as a student/employee?

A.  If you have what you feel is a legal question concerning your employment-related duties, please discuss your concerns with your direct supervisor and have the appropriate Dean, Director or Department Head contact this office if a resolution cannot be found at the administrative level.

Q.  May I receive legal representation by your office in my role as a Student- Employee?

A.  Student-employees may receive representation by this office, if they are found to be acting within the scope of their employment and their conduct has been determined not to be reckless or malicious.

Residency - For Tuition Purposes

Q.  How would I qualify as an in-State resident for tuition purposes?

A.  Residency for tuition purposes is defined and controlled by the Connecticut General Statute 10a-28-30, which governs residency policies at all public institutions of higher education within the State.

To qualify under these statutes, an individual must be able to demonstrate a clear intent to reside permanently in the State of Connecticut. There are numerous factors that may be considered in determining whether or not an individual has this appropriate intent. Please refer to the University Admissions' web page for further information regarding residency matters: Click here.

Veteran Tuition Waiver Benefits

Certain qualified Veterans may attend The University of Connecticut and receive tuition waivers for credit-bearing undergraduate and graduate programs. To qualify, veterans generally must be matriculated students who served during designated times of combat. This office works closely with the University to respond to tuition waiver requests and the mediation of the appeal process. The Veteran's Center is staffed by veterans who can help you and can assist you in applying for benefits. Check out the Connecticut Higher Education website for more information http://www.ctdhe.org/vet/default.htm or call them at 486-2442.
